Pollution, humidity and heat do not change your skin type, but they can change how your skin behaves and what it needs from its routine.

Your skincare routine does not operate in a controlled room.
It meets traffic fumes on the commute, dry indoor air at work, afternoon heat, sweat and sudden shifts in humidity. These exposures can influence hydration, comfort, oiliness and sensitivity, which explains why a formula that feels perfect in one season may feel completely wrong in another.
Your skin has not necessarily changed. Its working conditions have.
Pollution creates invisible pressure
Air pollution includes gases and microscopic particles produced by traffic, industry, smoke and other sources. Some pollutants can interact with the skin surface and contribute to oxidative stress, a process that occurs when reactive molecules exceed the skin’s antioxidant defences.
Research links particulate pollution with inflammatory activity, changes in surface lipids and disruption of normal barrier function. Pollution has also been associated with concerns such as uneven pigmentation and visible signs of ageing, although the effect varies with exposure, genetics and lifestyle.
This does not mean particles simply settle inside open pores. Pores do not expand and contract like doors. The concern is the chemical and inflammatory response that pollution may provoke at the surface.
A practical routine focuses on three things:
Thorough but comfortable cleansing to remove daily residue without repeatedly stripping the skin
Daily sunscreen because ultraviolet exposure creates additional oxidative stress
Antioxidant support through well formulated ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E or green tea compounds
Antioxidants can support the skin’s defence systems, but no serum creates an invisible shield against city air.
Humidity changes the moisture equation
Humidity describes how much water vapour is present in the air.
In a dry environment, water moves more readily from the skin into the surrounding air. Skin may begin to feel tighter, rougher or less flexible, particularly when low humidity is combined with cold weather or indoor cooling. Research shows that humidity can affect water content, texture and other measurements of skin function, although the relationship is more complex than the usual claim that dry air always increases water loss.
High humidity creates a different experience. Sweat evaporates less efficiently, so warmth and moisture can remain on the surface for longer. Rich layers may then feel sticky or uncomfortable, especially beneath sunscreen and makeup.
The answer is not to abandon moisturiser in humid weather.
It is to reconsider texture, quantity and layering.
A light lotion may feel more comfortable during a humid summer. A richer cream may become useful in colder or drier conditions. The function can remain the same while the format changes.
Heat changes the surface experience
As body temperature rises, the skin increases blood flow and produces sweat to help release heat. Facial oil may also spread more easily because sebum becomes less viscous at higher temperatures.
This can make the skin appear shinier without proving that it is producing dramatically more oil.
Sweat itself is not dirty or harmful. Problems are more likely when sweat remains mixed with oil, makeup, sunscreen and friction for extended periods. This combination may feel irritating or contribute to congestion in susceptible skin.
After heavy sweating:
Rinse or cleanse when practical
Avoid scrubbing the skin simply because it feels sticky
Reapply sunscreen when exposure continues
Choose breathable layers that remain comfortable in heat
Cooling ingredients cannot permanently lower skin temperature or rebalance circulation. Their main benefit is often sensory, creating a fresher or more soothing application experience.
Your climate should influence your routine
Location is not a skin type, but it is part of the context in which your skin functions.
A routine suited to a cool, dry climate may feel excessive during an Indian summer. A gel that feels ideal in humid weather may offer too little comfort during winter travel or long hours in cooled indoor spaces.
Instead of replacing your entire routine every season, adjust the variables that climate changes most:
Texture: lighter in heat, more cushioning in dryness
Quantity: less product when layers begin to feel sticky
Cleansing: enough to remove buildup, never enough to create tightness
Protection: sunscreen remains relevant in every season
The environment does not decide your skin type.
It changes the conditions your skin must respond to.
Good skincare is not built for an imaginary climate. It is built for the air, heat and humidity your skin actually lives in.
