Cleansing is a brief step, but the chemistry behind it matters.
A cleanser must loosen sunscreen, oil and daily residue, surround them within structures called micelles, then carry them away with water. The challenge is achieving this without leaving the skin excessively dry, tight or uncomfortable.
Calm Balance Cleanser approaches that challenge through CalmBalanceCleansingTechnology™, our name for its combined amino acid and taurine based surfactant system.
The finished cleanser is dermatologically tested. That testing applies to the complete product, while the individual ingredients explain how the formula was constructed.
The cleansing system
Amino acid surfactants, taurine based surfactants and coco betaine
Surfactants are the ingredients that perform the essential work of cleansing. Each molecule has one region attracted to oil and another attracted to water, allowing oily residue to be dispersed and rinsed away.
Amino acid based surfactants are frequently used in cleansers designed for mildness. Research also shows that surfactant behaviour depends on more than the family name. Concentration, micelle structure, supporting surfactants, contact time and the completed formula all influence cleansing strength and irritation potential.
Coco betaine contributes foam and supports the cleansing blend. It is commonly considered a milder amphoteric surfactant, although no surfactant is universally non irritating and rare contact reactions can occur.
This is why the formula should be described as a considered cleansing system, rather than claiming that any individual surfactant cannot disturb skin lipids.
Hydration during cleansing
Glycerin, propanediol and betaine
Humectants are included to improve the way the skin feels during and immediately after rinsing.
Glycerin and betaine help bind water, while propanediol contributes hydration, solvent function and smooth spread across the skin.
Because a cleanser remains on the face briefly and is then rinsed away, these ingredients should not be presented as delivering the same lasting hydration as a serum or moisturiser.
Their value is more immediate:

• Less of the dry, rigid feeling associated with some cleansers
• A smoother transition into the next step of the routine
In a cleanser, comfort is not an extra benefit. It is part of cleansing performance.
Post cleanse comfort support
Niacinamide, panthenol and beta glucan
Niacinamide and panthenol have substantial research in leave on skincare, but contact time changes what can reasonably be claimed in a cleanser.
Niacinamide should not be positioned here as a full brightening treatment. Its role is better framed as part of the formula’s skin conditioning system.
Panthenol contributes humectant and conditioning properties. Beta glucan is studied for water binding, film forming and soothing potential, although outcomes depend on its source, structure, concentration and delivery.
Together, these ingredients support how the skin feels after cleansing. They do not guarantee that twice daily washing will suit every person or that the cleanser can repair an already compromised barrier.
Botanical support
Centella asiatica and green tea extract
Centella asiatica contains compounds such as asiaticoside and madecassoside. Topical research suggests moisturising and inflammation moderating potential, but results belong to the specific extracts and concentrations studied.
Green tea contains polyphenols, including EGCG, which have demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory and topical research. In this rinse off formula, green tea is best described as antioxidant and conditioning support, rather than a lasting pollution shield.
Botanical does not automatically mean gentle. The quality of the extract and the complete formula remain more important than the familiarity of the plant name.
Moisture continuity
Hyaluronic acid and trehalose
Hyaluronic acid and trehalose are included as humectants that contribute to the hydrated feel of the gel and the comfort of the cleansing step.
They do not permanently lock water into freshly cleansed skin. Since the product is rinsed away, the most defensible benefit is support for a softer and less tight afterfeel.
Longer lasting moisture should come from the next step, particularly a suitable moisturiser.
