Should You Exfoliate Every Day?

The short answer: most people don’t need to exfoliate every day. How often depends on the strength of the product, the concern you’re treating and how your skin tolerates it.

What exfoliation does

Exfoliants loosen and remove dead cells from the surface of the skin, either with acids or enzymes (chemical) or with particles (physical). Used well, this can make skin look smoother and brighter. Used too often, it wears down the barrier that keeps water in and irritants out.

Signs you’re overdoing it

  • Stinging when you apply products that never stung before
  • Tightness, redness or a raw, overly shiny look
  • Flaking or rough patches that don’t settle
  • New breakouts or more sensitivity than usual

A sensible starting point

Start once or twice a week and watch how your skin responds over a couple of weeks before increasing. If you’re also using other actives, keep exfoliation on separate nights. In strong sun, consistent sunscreen matters even more, because freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable.

Brightening without daily peeling

Exfoliation is only one way to work on dark spots. Bright Reset Serum works on the pigment step itself, with SymWhite® 377, Hexylresorcinol and Alpha Arbutin, paired with Ectoin to keep skin comfortable. Combined with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser, that lets you work on uneven tone without exfoliating every day.
