Are Natural Ingredients Always Safer?

The short answer: no. “Natural” describes where an ingredient comes from. It does not tell you how gentle, safe or effective that ingredient is in a formula.
Origin is not the same as gentleness
Plants make many compounds to protect themselves, and some of them can irritate skin. Fragrant plant oils and essential oils are among the ingredients most often linked to sensitivity. At the same time, many lab-made ingredients are designed to be very close to what skin already contains.
Lab-made does not mean harsh
Ceramides are a good example. Your barrier is rich in them, and the ceramides used in skincare are usually made in a lab so they are pure and consistent from batch to batch. Being lab-made is what lets them match skin closely.
What to look at instead
- The job of each ingredient. Is it there to work on your concern, to calm skin, or to keep the formula stable?
- The whole formula. Concentration, pH and what an ingredient is paired with matter more than a single name.
- Testing. Dermatological testing on real skin tells you more than a “natural” claim.
- Your own skin. Patch test anything new and notice how your skin responds over a few days.
How we choose ingredients
We pick each ingredient for the job it does. Calm Balance Cleanser uses botanicals like Centella Asiatica and Green Tea, while Barrier Balance Moisturizer relies on skin-identical ceramides. None of our formulas contain added fragrance or essential oils. You can read what every ingredient does in our ingredient glossary.
